Botox: America’s most popular cosmetic procedure turns 10

In the 1820s, a doctor named Justinus Kerner conducted a study that led him to discovering a bacteria called botulinum, which he believed to be nothing more than a poison. More than 100 years later, doctors purified this toxin and it became Botox, the substance we all know and love today as the injectable than can make wrinkles disappear and help a person look years younger. Now, Botox is celebrating its 10th birthday as being one of the most popular cosmetic procedure in America.

Recently, WPTV in Florida published a brief history of Botox injections as a cosmetic procedure to mark this milestone.

Botox received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on April 15, 2002, mainly for use on lines between the brows. Since then, doctors have been discovering all sorts of purposes for Botox injections, some cosmetic and some not. For example, Total Beauty states that professionals have used Botox injections to cure migraine headaches and ease severe underarm sweating, two conditions that can seriously impact a person's quality of life.

WPTV went on to say that since receiving FDA approval, Botox has ranked the most common cosmetic procedure year after year. Approximately 5.7 million Americans had the injections in 2011, 518 percent more than the 1.1 million who had the injections in 2002.

Botox has even been able to survive the economic recession, where so many other cosmetic procedures have failed.

"We've seen our Botox numbers go up pretty much every year. Maybe people are coming a little less frequently, but more people are coming and they're doing more areas," said Kenneth Beer, a West Palm Beach, Florida dermatologist, quoted by WPTV.

Fredric Brandt, a dermatologist in Miami, told the news source that Botox is "the biggest revolution in cosmetology and dermatology in the last 30 years." The news source stated that Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A, which is a potentially fatal natural poison. There's nothing to worry about, however, because in small doses the the toxin simply temporarily paralyzes small muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. Typically, Botox injections last about four months.

While some people have criticized the procedure, Beer and Brant agreed that Botox has offered their patients a simple way to look and feel younger, which may boost their confidence.

"Botox really opened the door and unleashed a new era of cosmetic dermatology," said Beer, quoted by the news source. "So it was really that approval that unlocked the door to doctors to provide safe and effective cosmetic treatments."

In Brazil, minimally invasive cosmetic procedures are not considered luxuries

Many individuals view procedures like Botox injections or laser skin rejuvenation as luxuries reserved for the wealthy, despite them being more commonplace now than ever before. In Brazil, it appears as though the treatments are viewed as somewhat of a necessity, because clinics in the South American country are offering procedures at a significant discount or free of charge for low-income individuals.

The Washington Post spoke to some healthcare providers who are offering their services as a sort of charity to men and women seeking firmer necklines or wrinkle-free faces.

"What’s a wrinkle? Something minor, right? Something with precious little importance," said Nelson Rosas, a cosmetic surgeon at the Brazilian Society of Aesthetic Medicine's Rio clinic, quoted by the news source. "But when we treat the wrinkle, that unimportant little thing, we’re actually treating something very important: The patient’s self esteem."

Proponents of offering free or cheap cosmetic procedures to low-income individuals say that correcting a physical flaw may act as a sort of therapy, curing people of their insecurities. This notion was pioneered by plastic surgeon Ivo Pitanguy, according to the WaPo. Now 85 years old, Pitanguy still operates on all people – from the rich and famous to the less fortunate.

It's true that individuals need to be aware of the risks involved in cosmetic procedures – especially invasive operations like a breast augmentation. However, wanting a slight boost of self-esteem may be a legitimate reason for going under the scalpel, needle or laser, whatever the case may be.

An article that was published in Psych Central states that cosmetic enhancement can make a significant improvement in a person's self-esteem and sexual confidence. The news source cited a Barry University study which revealed that breast augmentation may result in an improved perception of self and sexual function in women.

However, people with significant self-esteem problems may not be ideal candidates for cosmetic procedures, as plastic surgery cannot fix deep-seated psychological issues.

"There may be patients who will never be satisfied with their bodies no matter how much surgery they receive or feel that their life will completely change after plastic surgery," said Cynthia Figueroa-Haas, a clinical assistant professor at the University of Florida College of Nursing, quoted by Psych Central.

A television star and a Muppet both proudly report getting Botox injections

Life in the limelight can be challenging, with media outlets and bloggers criticizing every fashion choice a celebrity makes, and each new wrinkle that appears on a star's face. Two ladies who know this well – Courteney Cox and Miss Piggy – recently spoke with news sources on why they choose Botox injections.
Cox told The Telegraph, a UK newspaper, that she's a "guinea pig" for products that promise a younger looking face.

"Look, I'm close to 50. Getting older isn't easy for anybody. Especially here in Los Angeles. So let's be clear: looking youthful is something I do a lot of research on. Man, I could use some Botox right now," Cox said, quoted by the news source.

Botox injections are just one component of Cox's skin care regimen. She also keeps her complexion protected from the sun's damaging UV rays, gets plenty of sleep and exercises regularly. Additionally, the actress said that she steers clear of carbohydrates and loads up on protein-rich foods like steak.

Clearly, Miss Piggy's diet isn't so stringent, as the full-figured Muppet was seen in her latest movie, simply titled The Muppets, downing a plate of iced donuts. She sat down for an interview with the Daily Mail in which she spilled her anti-aging secrets.

"I look younger. And the truth is that I have had work done," Piggy confessed to writer Jan Moir. "I'm not afraid to admit it, Moir. I believe one should maintain one’s beauty by whatever means necessary – nip and tuck, Botox, caulking. If it works, do it."

Last year, the International Business Times pointed out a number of other celebrities who have gone under the needle in order to look good on-screen.

Megan Fox, Kim Kardashian, Jenny McCarthy, Sharon Osbourne, Vanessa Williams, Jennie Garth, Daisy Fuentes, Simon Cowell, David Hasselhoff, Linda Evangelista, Janice Dickinson, Lisa Rinna, Cindy Crawford, Kim Catrall and Nicole Kidman all made the news source's list of Botox-ed celebrities.

Botox's popularity may be attributed to its proven efficacy and long-term safety. While the injectable is relatively common and safe, it's still important for patients to do research on the product and speak with their healthcare provider about whether Botox injections are appropriate for them.

Varicose veins should be evaluated by a doctor

The vast majority of individuals who have varicose or spider veins don't experience any associated problems and, in these cases, the bluish streaks or web-like formations are merely aesthetic issues. However, for others, bulging veins can represent a serious health problem.

According to the Mayo Clinic, about 20 to 25 percent of Americans experience varicose veins, and about 6 percent have conditions that may require medical attention, such as venous disease, skin changes or ulcerations.

"Evaluation of varicose veins with ultrasound is an easy and accurate way to assess the need for treatment. New, minimally invasive therapy is available today that is effective and is performed as outpatient treatment," said the Mayo Clinic's Peter Gloviczki, M.D.

Gloviczki was a co-developer for the Society for Vascular Surgery and American Venous Forums' national guidelines on varicose vein treatment.

Problematic varicose veins may itch, burn or ache, and typically appear in the legs, ankles and feet. Individuals who are pregnant, overweight or sedentary are more likely to develop varicose veins. As such, exercise and weight loss may help alleviate problems stemming from bulging veins.

Varicose veins are typically caused by improper blood flow in the legs, which may be corrected to an extent by wearing compression stockings. Other treatment options include laser vein removal, but indiviudals should be sure they're good candidates for the treatment.

"New therapy with radiofrequency or laser is safe and effective, but such procedures should be done after careful evaluation, in selected patients only," said Gloviczki.

Signs that varicose veins are more than just an unsightly bother include swollen legs, changes in the skin texture or color and bleeding from the veins. People who experience these symptoms should seek medical attention in order to rule out a blood clot or ulcer.

If a healthcare provider determines that you're a viable candidate for laser vein removal, you may be able to look forward to a summer where you're free to bare your legs without embarrassment, because the laser treatment has been shown time and again to be safe and effective.

Laser vein removal of deep veins sometimes entails a small catheter being inserted into the vein, where it heats the vein from the inside, thereby closing it off. Usually, this requires local anesthesia and is performed as an outpatient procedure.

Want a younger looking neck? You have many options

Reflections for Botox injections.

The neck is often the first part of the body to show signs of aging, because its skin tends to be thin and is subjected to constant movement. Moreover, your neck doesn’t even get a break when you're sleeping, as it's usually twisted in a position that adds to the "turkey neck" effect, as well as bands, wrinkles and general sagging.

However, there are many options to obtain a younger looking neck. What you choose depends upon your personal preferences, budget, physiology and willingness to go under the scalpel.

Other than using creams or neck-strengthening exercises, Botox injections may be one of the least invasive methods of a neck lift. In an article in the Palm Beach Post, plastic surgeon Anita Mandal, M.D., wrote that Botox injections are commonly used by experienced healthcare professionals in order to give patients firmer neck skin.

According to Mandal, the injectable works best on people with hyperactive platysmal muscle bands, which run vertically in the neck but can cause a horizontal banding effect.

The Cleveland Clinic reports that Botox injections in the neck may reduce the appearance of banding, and are also an anesthesia-free outpatient procedure.

The medical resource also states that liposuction of the neck may be effective at shaving years off a patient's appearance. During traditional fat-sucking procedures, an incision is made under the chin and tubes suction out excess tissue.

However, men and women seeking major neck-slimming need not be subjected to these antiquated methods any longer. Today, laser liposuction techniques allow for fat removal with smaller incisions and less healing time. This is because the technology allows a healthcare provider to liquefy fat before suctioning it from the body, making the whole process easier.

A traditional neck lift – which is also called a cervicoplasty – may involve a number of incisions and sites of tissue removal. For instance, a surgeon would typically cut from the chin to the ears in order to gain access to the neck muscles and any underlying fat. From there, the physician may tighten muscle, remove fat and cut away excess skin. This procedure may involve general or local anesthesia, and weeks of recovery time.

Individuals who want a slimmer or younger looking neck should discuss all of their options with their healthcare provider in order to choose the method that suits them best.

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills keep up appearances with Botox injections

Fans of Bravo's Real Housewives of Beverly Hills may not be shocked to hear it, but the female cast members aren't afraid of laser skin rejuvenation or Botox injection in order to keep their faces camera ready – not to mention looking good enough to overshadow their co-stars.

Recently, "Housewife" Brandi Glanville spoke with Shape magazine on how the 39-year-old is able to retain a smooth complexion and trim figure even while raising kids.

The reality show star doesn't merely visit her cosmetic surgeon and relax on the beach all day, either. She told the news source that she works out with her personal Pilates instructor every day in order to stay in shape. Also, she said that having children to chase after and dogs to walk forces her to get out and get moving – no treadmills necessary.

Diet is also an important component of preserving a youthful look well into one's 30s, 40s and 50s. Glanville told Shape that she stays away from sweets, and that when she's going to indulge she often chooses savory pastas and bread.

Let's not forget about her glowing complexion. Glanville admitted that she experiences occasional discoloration from her melasma and acne. For these, she said she gets laser skin rejuvenation and other light-enhanced facials. Additionally, protecting the skin from the sun with hats and sunglasses is always a good idea to keep wrinkles and sun spots at bay.

Glanville also told Shape that she gets Botox injections and other fillers to erase deep lines and wrinkles.

"Yes, I'll cop to a few plastic surgery procedures like Botox and fillers. I think everyone should do what makes them feel good but remember: Less is more!" Glanville said, quoted by the news source.

In an interview with E! Online, "Housewives" Lisa Vanderpump and Adrienne Maloof also said they get regular Botox injections. In fact, Maloof's husband is a cosmetic surgeon and reportedly lends his skills to a few of the Housewives.

"I just pop across the street," Vanderpump said about getting her Botox injections.

Just because the Real Housewives get Botox injections like they would borrow a cup of sugar doesn't mean that the procedure should be taken lightly. Individuals interested in getting injectables should first have a counseling session with their healthcare provider to make sure they are good candidates for the treatment.

“Brotox” gives men the subtle change they need to score a job or date

Reflections for Botox injections.

Some men who notice a forehead crease creeping in or emerging laugh lines around the mouth may want more of a change than creams and serums can provide, but are hesitant about the expense and exaggerated look of a full-on facelift. For these men, Botox injections appear to be the top choice of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures.

The Tampa Bay Times recently reported on the trend, which has been dubbed "Brotox."

"Today's man is evolving,'' said cosmetic surgeon Richard Castellano, M.D., quoted by the news source. Guys are feeling more comfortable with improving their appearance. They aren't as scared.''

Statistics from the American Academy of Plastic Surgeons reveal that about 300,000 men got Botox injections in 2011, which amounts to a 10 percent increase over the previous year's numbers. Castellano told the news source that in his practice, the number of male Botox clients has doubled in recent years. In fact, even the surgeon gets the minimally invasive procedure himself.

Apparently, the trend is nothing new in bigger cities, because the New York Times reported on it in 2008. According to the news source, Botox injections can be a way for a man to gain leverage in his career or appear more alert during the day. The latter was the case of Cody Lee, a small business owner in San Francisco, who regularly got inquiries from colleagues about his sleep patterns.

“I think it’s fine having some lines or wrinkles on your face, but I wanted to avoid those deep impressions," Lee said, quoted by the news source.

Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox, has even begun to market the product to men, issuing informational material that features Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz, who is reportedly a Botox devotee.

Key differences between the male Botox user and ladies who get the injections are that men may need higher doses of the drug because they have thicker skin and stronger muscles. Male clients may also see their Botox specialist less often, as they tend to deal with the return of their wrinkles better than most women do.

The New York Times also reported that men are getting Botox injections in their underarms to prevent excessive sweating – which may help them land a date quicker than a smooth forehead.

People look into laser tattoo removal to expand career opportunities

Individuals who are seeking a high-profile career but are stuck with body art from their past – perhaps a conspicuous neck tattoo or offensive forearm ink – may consider laser tattoo removal in order to boost their chances of climbing up the corporate ladder.

Employers in the U.S. aren't prohibited by law to discriminate against job candidates based on their body art. Officials in Sydney, Australia recently enacted a ban on visible tattoos for police officers, leading to an uptick in the number of laser tattoo removal procedures being done in the area, according to a report by newspaper Sydney Central.

"We have noticed a large number of young professionals that are having their tattoos removed," said Jacinta Keoghan, medical director of a cosmetic procedure spa, quoted by the news source. "We find that these tattoos are often from previous relationships, or undertaken many years ago. We have also had an 80-year-old woman come through our doors."

For recent college gradates, there may be some other factors to consider.

An article in Purdue University newspaper The Exponent reports that some people entering the labor force with ink may be better off than others. For instance, one pharmacy student who has amino acid tattoos on the back of his arms found that his body art was actually appealing to his new employer, perhaps because the tattoos were related to his science field.

The news source states that some employers are bound to be more conservative than others, and that it may all come down to the placement of a tattoo. This suggests that college students may want to consider getting inked in an area that can be easily concealed. Hiding body art may be especially important during a job interview, when a potential employer is making his or her first judgment of candidates.

"Human nature, as it is, can be an unspoken factor," said Tim Luzader, the director of the Center for Career Opportunities at Purdue, quoted by the news source.

For some people, it's too late to take into consideration the size, location and appropriateness of a tattoo when it comes to job prospects. Luckily, modern laser tattoo removal procedures are more effective than before and tend to be less painful than getting inked.

Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures do more than target wrinkles

Reflections for Restylane injections.
Reflections for Restylane injections.

When looking in the mirror, you may blame an exaggerated forehead crease or crow's feet at the corners of your eyes for revealing your age. However, obtaining a younger looking appearance entails more than reducing the severity of wrinkles, and it may involve something that you fought in your younger years.

In your 20s, you might have lamented a little bit of roundness in your face or chubby cheeks. But now that you're older, that volume is gone and it may be the reason why wrinkles are forming and skin is sagging.

"As much as lines and wrinkles make us look older, we're learning that volume loss is just as critical," said California dermatologist Jenny Kim, M.D. "Because of that, we're looking at the aging process a little differently now and understanding the importance of replacing volume loss in the face and to restore the fullness of a more youthful appearance."

While you may not have guessed that a loss of volume was to blame for an aging face, it's something that cosmetic surgeons have known for years. As such, there are a number of minimally invasive procedures to restore a plump look, such as Restylane injections or laser skin rejuvenation.

"Many fillers for the aging face are now designed to create a fuller, more youthful appearance, instead of targeting only wrinkles or fine lines," said Kim. "In addition, facial rejuvenation with lasers is now more targeted, resulting in quicker results and less downtime."

The dermatologist noted that once a person reaches 40, they naturally begin to lose the fat and collagen in their face. This can lead to shadowing or darkening of areas that have already begun to show the signs of aging. Fillers, such as Restylane injections, can help restore fullness to the cheeks.

Additionally, laser skin rejuvenation can play a significant part in smoothing the epidermis, which may make it look fuller and more vibrant.

When used in conjunction with a healthy skin care routine, these minimally invasive cosmetic procedures may result in a fresh, youthful look, as opposed to the frozen or stretched appearance that sometimes resulted from traditional, invasive facelifts.

Even though these new treatments are able to take a few years off a patient's face with minimal risks or side effects, individuals should still be sure to do their homework when choosing a medical spa or healthcare provider.

Prepare for summer’s leg-baring fashions with laser hair removal

Reflections for laser hair removal.
Reflections for laser hair removal.

There may still be a chill in the air in many regions of the country, but fashion magazines and websites are beginning to report on the trendiest styles for this spring and summer, and let's just say that you're going to want to get your legs in shape.

Miniskirts, hot pants and dresses are likely to flood store racks come April, so in addition to doing your squats and investing in a quality sunless tanner, it may be a good idea to consider laser hair removal.

The high-tech cosmetic procedure – which is also known as fraxel hair removal – allows you to go all summer without dealing with razors, hair removal creams or painful waxing, while still enjoying smooth, hairless gams. Moreover, you can avoid embarrassment due to stubble or missed areas.

So, how does laser hair removal work? Well, a certified practitioner uses an intense laser pulse to damage the hair follicle, which slows the progression of hair growth for semi-permanent results. For the legs, you'll likely need a few sessions to completely remove the hair, and follow-up procedures may also be needed to maintain smooth legs.

While it's been reported that people with light skin and dark hair make the best candidates for laser hair removal, today's advanced tools and techniques allow people of many skin colors and hair types to get effective results from the procedure. However, if you have dark skin or light hair, it may be a good idea to choose a provider who is experienced in working with your particular coloring.

In order to prepare for fraxel hair removal, first research different facilities and their practitioners. This will help you obtain the best results and minimize any risks involved in the procedure. After choosing a trusted and experienced professional, you will need to have a consultation with them, where you'll get an idea of how much the treatment will cost, how many sessions will be necessary, what maintenance will be needed and what to expect following laser hair removal.

Also, before going in for your appointment, you should stay out of the sun to avoid burning or blisters, which may complicate the laser treatment. Additionally, you shouldn't pluck, wax or get electrolysis on your legs, as this may cause changes to the follicles, which may make fraxel hair removal more difficult.
