This male patient had deep scarring from cystic acne that he wanted to remove.
These kind of deep scars are called boxcar acne scars, and they don’t react as well to laser or microneedling treatments because:
- They are usually tethered to the fascia below by thick scar tissue that cannot be broken up by lasering or microneedling
- There is a lack of normal fat support below this skin, and that means simply breaking up the scar tissue is not enough – you need to fill in that gap in order to raise the skin up to the same surface height as the surrounding skin.
Subcision is a mechanical method of breaking up the scar tissue. Filler replaces the missing volume. The result is a natural-appearing and dramatic correction of deep acne scars.
