How Do Radiofrequency Treatments Work?
Both iFine and ThermiSmooth work by introducing radiofrequency energy to the deepest layers of the skin, where a collagen matrix provides support and volume. Your body’s production of new collagen to rebuild this matrix over time declines during the natural aging process, leading to skin that sags, wrinkles, and thins because of a lack of support. This radiofrequency energy can tighten existing collagen and jumpstart your body’s ability to produce new collagen underneath the skin. Tightening and firming the skin will reduce sagging and wrinkling while also firming the skin to eliminate crepey-ness and fine lines. When it comes to treating the skin around our eyes, treatments need to be gentle but effective – and that can be a hard balance to pull off with lasers and collagen-inducing treatments, because the treatments do need to be adjusted quite a bit from what you would do for the jawline or brows, for example. This is one reason why you’ll see that while we do own and use our Ultherapy and Thermage machines quite a bit, we don’t tend to recommend them for the eyelids. And while ThermiSmooth and iFine can be used for other parts of the face, we don’t tend to recommend them for that, because the results just aren’t up to our standards.
What Can I Expect from Treatment?
iFine and ThermiSmooth are painless and, in fact, most patients describe the treatment as having the sensation of a warm massage, which is very relaxing. This occurs while the radiofrequency energy heats the collagen deep in the skin, prompting the body to produce more. The temperature of collagen heating needs to be precisely controlled to within 1-3˚C, so we use a special heat-sensing camera in addition to systems built into the applicator tip to ensure not only that we’re not overheating any areas (which would result in an automatic shut-off of the machine), but also that we are getting to optimal heat in each and every section being treated, as visualized on the heat-sensing camera display. This camera is not something all practices use, and is not part of the treatment platform. We chose to invest in it in order to provide the very best treatments and results for our patients. Because this skin-tightening process relies on your body’s own natural healing and repair systems, most patients undergo a package of 4-6 treatments and see their most dramatic results at 3-6 months after their final treatment. Treatment sessions generally takes less than an hour, and you won’t need to take any downtime afterward. Very few patients experience any complications with these treatments, although some redness or very light swelling can sometimes occur in the few hours following the treatment session. Some patients can benefit from a physician-grade skincare regimen and/or Botox and Filler injections in tandem with their iFine or ThermiSmooth treatments, which would be recommended by our physicians during the free consultation, as a part of their customized treatment plan.
